West German potters in the '60s and '70s weren't shy about colour, and this vase is proof. This large floor vase comes from Scheurich, one of the biggest names to come out of the country's fat-lava-era pottery boom, and it shows off exactly the kind of bold, tactile design the era is known for.
The body alternates deep, glossy green bands with a heavily dimpled, hobnail-style texture against warm burnt-orange bands stamped with a repeating floral medallion pattern. A ribbed green collar finishes the neck. It's a big, confident piece that reads as sculpture as much as vessel — the kind of thing that anchors a room on its own.
Features:
- Large floor vase, cylindrical form with a ribbed neck
- Alternating glossy green (textured, hobnail-effect) and burnt-orange (embossed floral) bands
- Substantial scale — statement-piece sized
- Moulded maker's marks typical of Scheurich production on the base
- Made in West Germany, 1960s–70s fat lava era
About Scheurich
Scheurich began in 1928 as a glass and porcelain wholesale business, founded by cousins Alois Scheurich and Fridolin Greulich, and moved into ceramic production of its own in the 1950s. By the 1960s and '70s, the company had become one of West Germany's largest and most prolific pottery manufacturers, turning out vases, jugs, planters, and — above all — the large, boldly glazed floor vases the "fat lava" era is best remembered for. Scheurich's designers leaned into rich colour and heavy surface texture, and pieces like this one are a great, accessible entry point for anyone drawn to that distinctive West German look.
Style notes
A piece this scale makes a real statement in a Mid-Century Modern living room or entryway anywhere in Toronto or across Ontario — set on the floor beside a credenza or sofa, it does the work of a sculpture while still functioning as a vase. The green and orange palette pairs especially well with warm teak furniture.
